Lent – Day 1 – Fasting      

Hello again!

Yesterday I was telling you I was raised a Catholic. And today is Ash Wednesday. Said rite is to remind us that this body is borrowed, however I prefer to focus this whole tradition around resurrection, recognizing Christ’s sacrifice to redeem all our sins, AND give us the gift of Eternal Life.

Why fasting? Well, religiously and spiritually it gets us closer to God and empowers prayer. My focus for this series, however is to honor this gift of life on earth that God, Himself gave us; and as a way to express love to ourselves by taking better care of what we ingest and follow Christ’s second commandment: “And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39) – it is implied that after God, you should love yourself second.

So, going deeper into fasting. Fasting for this 40 days will mean every day: avoid all toxicity in your life – that includes negativity, stress and violence. A dear friend of mine says that what we actually shouldn’t eat during Lent is kindred and by not eating kindred we mean criticizing, gossiping or speaking negatively about another one.

The food side of fasting as we defined it here will include avoiding simple carbs and sugars as an every day thing and weekend fasting by ingesting your foods from quality liquids filled with protein such as broths, smoothies, yogurt, etc.

Here I will share three of my favorite recipes:

Broth:

Buy bones either pork or beef; chicken wings, hands or tail will make a great broth too. Add vegetables to your broth, such as: mushrooms, carrots, and zucchini; spice with black pepper, a pinch of salt, onion and garlic. I usually will use 500 gr or 1 lb of meat to make the broth, 100 gr, 1/8 lb of mushrooms, 1 carrot, 1 zucchini, ½ cup of onion, 1clove of garlic (minced), 1 tsp – 2 tsp of pepper a dash of salt and 1 jalapeno pepper.

Smoothie:

1 scoop of protein powder, ½ a banana, 1 tbsp of peanut butter, 1 tbsp of ground oatmeal, 300 ml/ 1 pint of water or milk. Blend. You can add some spice like cinnamon, ginger or cardamom to make it special and a dash of Stevia.

Lassi:

150 ml/ ½ pint of yogurt, 150 ml/ ½ pint of yogurt, fruit ( ½ a mango, ½ cup strawberries or ½ cup of black berries  and ¼  of a cup of seeds (sunflower are my favorite). Blend, pour in a glass with ice, Enjoy!
